I’ve certainly noticed the lack of female cyclists in NYC, but I can’t say this article helps answer any of my questions about why, in a city with rapidly improving bike infrastructure, male cyclists still outnumber female cyclists 3 to 1. The best answer this article gives is that women are afraid of cycling’s “risks” and afraid of their own sweat. New York is a risky city. It’s not as if bike fatalities disproportionately effect female cyclists. Of course, talking to the folks at Adeline Adeline and exactly one bike commuter who, according to my informal calculations, probably bikes about 2 miles each way to work, is also a poor way to try to answer this question. Please, wear a helmet and bring an extra change of clothes.
